“I’d love to write a book someday,” my friend tells me. “Yeah, me too,” says another friend. I have heard this same story from so many different people! When I ask them what’s holding them back, the answer is always the same: “I don’t have the time.” Which makes me wonder if they really want to write their book.
So, when will you have the time? Are you going to wait until you retire before you write your book? Do you really want to wait that long? The truth is, you do have time: you just need to make writing your book a priority. Here, I’m going to show you 3 steps to write your book quickly.
1. Commit to writing every day
Do you watch TV? Can you cut out 30 minutes or even an hour of TV and write instead? The truth is, we all have the same amount of time – it’s what we prioritize that makes a difference. If you really want to write your book, you will be able to find the time. If you write for just 30 minutes a day, you’ll have your book written before you know it!
2. Find a Writer’s Group to Hold You Accountable
Second, find people to motivate you. Join a local writer’s group, or join one on Facebook. Share your wins, and ask for help or support when you get stuck. If you’re not sure how to word a particular sentence, or need to know if your meaning is clear, a writer’s group can help! Maybe you just need to vent that your partner/children/pets won’t leave you alone during your writing time – your writer’s group will understand.
3. Set a Completion Date
Third, commit to finishing your book. Set a goal and reward yourself. If your goal is to write your book before the end of 2018, how will you celebrate when it’s done? Envision that success. On days when you don’t want to write, use that vision to keep you moving forward.
Having a date in mind will also let you know how much writing you need to do each day. If your goal is to write a 25-chapter novel, and you want to finish your book in a month, you need to write a chapter a day. 30 minutes may not be enough time, so you will need to plan to write for an hour or two every day, depending on your writing speed.
These three small changes will have a powerful impact on your writing. Now stop browsing the Internet and get to work!

This was super insightful! I think it’s most important to hold yourself accountable and stay committed.
Yes, and this is really hard for some people. That’s why I recommend finding a group to help!
Very helpful and practical advice. My best friend actually wrote a book and just finished her second. She definitely took a long time to write it but I would love to share this with her! These tips could’ve helped her stay more on task and motivated.
Fantastic! If you want to write a book too, I bet you two could motivate each other!
So this post is absolutely great! I’ve been a writer forever but I’ve always wanted to be a publisher author and I finally put my foot down and said I was going to publish SOMETHING this year. So I set myself up for a little ebook and set the publication date on Amazon already so I have no choice but to stick to it! I’m going to share your tips on my writing group on FB!
Sounds great! What’s your Facebook group?
I think the best writing is the writing that comes naturally. Dates and completion are important but how do you avoid the pressure of completion (which most often leads to writer’s block)…
For someone who’s a good writer, this can be true. But a lot of people aren’t natural writers, and may need some pressure to motivate them. The way I look at it is that I can always write a “shitty first draft,” then come back and edit. Since editing is much easier than writing, this is a less daunting process than feeling the need for everything to come naturally the first time.
these are such great tips to apply to any goal you’re working on! forming a group for accountability seems to really work for me… especially when it comes to working out lol
Setting a goal and writing everyday could be applied to so many jobs. Good tips for accountability.
These are certainly good tips – adaptable to any project, by the way. However, I believe that a good book needs quality time even in the making. So if you are writing, take your time and wait for the right inspiration.
Yes, these are adaptable to other projects. But I think that sometimes inspiration comes while you’re writing – so even if you’re not feeling it at first, you might if you sit down and start!
You have some good points! I have been wanting to write a book for years!
That’s great! What’s stopping you?
I’ve tried the first and third suggestions and they worked for only so long, but joining the writer’s group is something I had never thought about before. I think this would be great to help me carry on! Thank you for the tip!!
Yes, it can be really motivating! Having other people cheer you on and help you when you get stuck is so important!
UPDATE: I’ve actually spoken to my husband about writing a book and after reading your post, I think I’m going to go for it. I’m really excited about this!
Fantastic! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!
These are great tips. It’s difficult sometimes to stay on track.
Yeah, it can be…life can get in the way all too easily. That’s why I think it’s important to have a group to motivate you, and a set deadline to keep you going when times are tough.
I can never think of writing a book, my choice words suck. But, I may want to write short stories in the future.
It is a very nice blog post.
That’s what the thesaurus is for! It’s an invaluable tool for writers, even ones with a large vocabulary.
The last two are still doable but the first one seems so difficult. Writing on a everyday basis will be good.
Yeah, and it’s probably the most important one. But even if you can’t write every day, you can still be consistent with your writing habits – set aside one hour 3 days a week to write, and that’s better than not writing at all!
Really great tips to help you ACTUALLY write that book. I’m planning to pen mines next year with a friend to keep myself accountable.
Fantastic! What will yo be writing about?
I think accountability groups are the best groups to keep you in check no matter what your goal is!
Yes, they can be useful for any goal!
Great tips to apply to any goal! For me Commit to writing every day will help me to achieve my goal..
Yes, you’re right! Committing to daily action, finding a support group, and setting a deadline can help someone achieve any goal!
